Ketamine treatment
Ketamine is not FDA-approved specifically for anxiety disorders. Evidence is smaller and more preliminary than the depression literature, and depression findings should not be presented as proof of anxiety treatment effectiveness. Established psychological and medication treatments remain part of a clinician-led assessment.

Located in Seminole County along the southern shore of Lake Monroe, Sanford is a historic city within the broader Central Florida region. For residents navigating complex mental health challenges, traditional oral antidepressants and talk therapy may not always provide sufficient relief. In these cases, patients may explore advanced interventions such as ketamine therapy. Though originally developed and utilized as a surgical anesthetic, ketamine—along with its FDA-approved nasal spray counterpart, Spravato (esketamine)—has increasingly been adopted into psychiatric care across Florida for adults with specific treatment-resistant conditions.
While exploring treatment options, patients in Sanford will find that specialized clinics are accessible within Seminole County and the surrounding Greater Orlando metropolitan area. Just a short drive away, Caya Health in neighboring Lake Mary offers Spravato treatment. Additional options are available slightly further south, where Sana Ketamine and LifeStance Therapists & Psychiatrists Orlando provide various forms of ketamine therapy and Spravato. When expanding their search to understand regional standards, patients may also consult guides for other Florida communities, such as Orange Park, Coral Springs, and Bradenton.
Deciding to pursue ketamine or Spravato therapy is a significant medical decision that requires consultation with a qualified psychiatrist or primary care physician. These treatments necessitate a comprehensive psychological and physiological assessment to ensure patient safety and appropriateness of care. Seminole County provides robust local medical networks to facilitate these evaluations, ensuring that residents can access the rigorous diagnostic support required before beginning any specialized clinical depression treatment protocols.
Treatment schedules vary by clinic and treatment type, so plan transportation for each visit. Distances below are straight-line miles from Sanford.

The financial framework for ketamine therapy in Seminole County is heavily influenced by the type of treatment prescribed. Compounded ketamine given through intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), or sublingual routes is used off-label for mental health conditions. As a result, standard health insurance plans generally do not cover these treatments, leaving patients responsible for self-pay arrangements. Because these compounded formulations lack specific FDA approval for psychiatric care, the FDA warns patients and health care providers about potential risks associated with compounded ketamine products. Patients should ask clinics for a comprehensive written estimate detailing the costs of assessments, monitoring, and infusions.
Spravato (esketamine) differs financially because it is an FDA-approved medication for specific forms of adult treatment-resistant depression. Many commercial insurance policies cover Spravato, provided the patient meets strict clinical criteria and obtains prior authorization. Patients must verify their coverage to anticipate out-of-pocket deductibles and copayments. Beyond medical billing, individuals must plan for logistical costs. The rigorous induction phase of treatment requires repeated clinic visits—frequently twice a week. Patients commuting from Sanford to clinics in Lake Mary or Orlando must factor in transportation expenses, fuel, and potential missed wages from time away from work.
Accessing advanced therapies like Spravato involves strict procedural requirements to ensure patient safety. Spravato must be administered in a certified medical facility under direct clinical supervision. Following administration, patients are required to remain on-site for a minimum of two hours so staff can monitor for potential side effects, including dissociation and sedation. Furthermore, patients are strictly prohibited from driving until the next day after a restful sleep. A trusted adult must be available to drive the patient back to Sanford. Navigating these requirements in Central Florida means planning around the region's intense summer heat and severe afternoon thunderstorms, which can heavily impact traffic on Interstate 4 and local routes.
While telehealth is a valuable tool for initial psychiatric consultations and ongoing progress assessments, it cannot replace the required on-site clinical observation. Spravato is never dispensed for home administration. Some medical professionals may prescribe off-label compounded ketamine for home use, but these are not FDA-approved for psychiatric conditions. The FDA advises against using compounded ketamine without direct clinical monitoring due to serious safety risks. If you or someone in your care is facing a mental health crisis, please contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988 (available 24/7), or call 911 for immediate emergency response.
Ketamine is an anesthetic often used off-label via IV or intramuscular injections for conditions like depression. Spravato is a specific esketamine nasal spray that is FDA-approved for adults with treatment-resistant depression. Both require thorough medical evaluation and must be administered under professional supervision at a certified clinic.
Clinic policies vary. While some Central Florida facilities allow patients to self-refer for an initial consultation, many require a formal referral from an existing primary care physician or psychiatrist. Additionally, if you seek insurance coverage for Spravato, your insurer will mandate documented proof of previous unsuccessful antidepressant treatments.
No. Due to the sedative and dissociative effects of the medication, driving is strictly prohibited after treatment. Patients receiving Spravato or IV ketamine must coordinate a ride home with a responsible adult and avoid operating heavy machinery until the day after they have had a restful sleep.
Treatment typically requires a two-hour clinical observation window, plus transportation time. Commuting from Sanford to clinics in Lake Mary or Orlando can be affected by I-4 traffic and afternoon summer storms. Patients must factor these delays into their schedules, especially during the intensive twice-weekly induction phase of treatment.
Generally, no. Major medical insurance networks view off-label IV, IM, or sublingual compounded ketamine infusions as experimental for psychiatric care and do not cover them. Patients choosing these treatments usually pay out-of-pocket. However, FDA-approved Spravato is often covered by insurance, subject to strict prior authorization requirements.
Some telehealth services prescribe compounded ketamine for at-home use, but this practice is off-label and not FDA-approved. The FDA explicitly warns about the safety risks of unmonitored home administration. Conversely, FDA-approved Spravato is heavily regulated and is legally restricted to being administered only within certified healthcare settings.
Costs, coverage & aftercare
IV, IM and compounded ketamine for psychiatric conditions are off-label; many programs are self-pay. Ask about assessment, medication, administration, monitoring, therapy and maintenance charges separately. We do not assume a statewide price.
Spravato is FDA-approved esketamine, not the same as ketamine infusions. Coverage is not guaranteed. Check eligibility, prior authorization, network status, drug and visit charges, deductibles and copays with your insurer and clinic.
Spravato requires a certified healthcare setting and monitoring for at least two hours. Arrange transport home; do not drive until the next day after restful sleep. For other ketamine treatments, follow your clinician's instructions. Follow-up and maintenance depend on response and tolerability.
Ask who manages your medications, how your usual clinician will receive updates, and whom to contact between visits. Neither a shortage designation nor local depression statistics show that ketamine is appropriate or effective for you. Consult a licensed physician.
Use these questions when you call or book a consultation with any Sanford provider.
Ask whether a physician, psychiatrist or anesthesiologist oversees each session and who you can reach afterward.
A good clinic reviews your history, medications, blood pressure and past treatments before recommending ketamine.
Look for continuous vital-sign monitoring and a calm, private recovery space.
IV infusions, Spravato® nasal spray, IM or sublingual options suit different goals and budgets.
Ask how the clinic coordinates with your therapist or offers integration support between sessions.
Request a written estimate for the first series and any maintenance sessions before you start.
